Secondary Fairy Tale Drama Competition
A Twist in the Tale: Year 10 Fairy Tale Drama Competition Casts Its Spell
As part of the vibrant English Week celebrations, the English Department organised a spectacular Fairy Tale Drama Competition for Year 10 students on the 9th of May 2025 at the Dato Ong Kim Kee Hall. Classic stories were brought back to life with humour, creativity, and unexpected surprises that had the audience in stitches and awe.
The first prize went to the talented Year 10G girls comprising of Amelia Binoy, Estella Chai, Evonne Ng, Hritika Sohal, Jeannie Ting, Kara Lim Melanie Wong and Preet Lalwani, who gave a brilliantly original twist to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Dressed in beautiful costumes and using cleverly improvised props with flair, the group turned the familiar fairy tale on its head. In their version, it wasn’t the prince’s kiss that saved Snow White. Instead, it was a heated and hilarious argument among the dwarfs over the details of her funeral that caused the coffin to shake—leading Snow White to cough out the apple and come back to life! The clever scene had the audience roaring with laughter and applauding the girls’ fresh take on the tale.
Joint second place was awarded to 10R’s Alice in Wonderland and 10Y’s Cinderella. The Alice team brought quirky characters to life with vivid costumes and beautiful props, capturing the dreamlike essence of Wonderland with a modern twist. Cinderella stayed true to the classic tale, winning hearts with graceful performances, a clear narrative, and elegantly coordinated costumes and beautiful props that enhanced the fairy tale charm.
Another memorable performance came from the second team from 10R, whose take on Hansel and Gretel was confident and compelling. With expressive acting, strong pacing, and imaginative staging, the team captured the eerie spirit of the tale and earned enthusiastic applause from the audience.
From plot twists to powerful performances, the competition proved that fairy tales are not just stories of the past—they are living tales that evolve with the storyteller. The event was a true celebration of creativity, language, and the joy of performance. Congratulations to all teams for making the Fairy Tale Drama Competition a magical highlight of English Week!
